Overview

Our policies have three main dates:

  1. The Policy Start Date (also named Policy Effective Date)

  2. The Coverage Effective Date

  3. The Policy End Date

When quoting or binding a policy, you will select a start date. If the start date is the same as the purchase date, the coverage will become effective 5 days later. This means policyholders are only covered beginning 5 days after the policy start date.

Now, if the start date is five days out of the purchase date, the coverage will start immediately.

The policy end date is always one year after the start date.

Example 1: Start date is the same as the purchase date

  • Purchase date: March 1, 2025

  • Start date: March 1, 2025

  • Coverage effective date: March 6, 2025 (5-day waiting period applies)

  • Policy end date: March 1, 2026

Explanation:
Because the start date matches the purchase date, coverage does not begin immediately. The policyholder is covered starting on March 6, 2025.

Example 2: Start date is more than 5 days after the purchase date

  • Purchase date: March 1, 2025

  • Start date: March 10, 2025 (9 days after purchase)

  • Coverage effective date: March 10, 2025 (coverage starts immediately)

  • Policy end date: March 10, 2026

Explanation:
Since the start date is more than five days after the purchase date, coverage becomes effective on the start date with no waiting period.

๐Ÿ’ก If a policyholder wants their coverage to begin on the day they move into a new home, itโ€™s important to plan ahead and purchase the policy before the move-in date. This ensures the coverage effective date starts as soon as they move into their new home.
